Glorious White Otter - WHITE OTTER LAKE - Day Thirty Six

There is not much more you could ask of a canoeing destination than what we found beyond the portage into White Otter. The lake stretches roughly 20km North to South and is never more than 3km wide. The shores are adorned with lengthy beaches and massive rock expanses. The water is incredibly clear and as you paddle over the rocks, even in deeper parts, you can watch as fish swim between the dark crevasses. We were even welcomed to the park by otters who poked their heads out of the lake to investigate who we were before gliding along the surface away from the portage.

White Otter Castle is alone a site worth visiting. On the East shore of the lake this massive wood cabin stands four stories tall, with the highest points made from 43 logs. The entire home was built by one man in 1915. At the age of 60 he gathered the logs, shaped them, and hauled them (each log weighed 1600 pounds to a ton) into place. You can walk through the castle now and the view of the lake from the fourth storey tower is quite something.

Just North of the Castle lies a sandbar that you can walk on half way across the lake - a perfect place for a picnic lunch. Carrying on for a lazy afternoon we drifted in the tail wind. Erik jigged for walleye and I took a quick cat nap. The early afternoon found us reaching the Northern tip of the lake to arrive at a supreme campsite. On top of a 6 foot cliff (prime for jumping into the lake on such a hot day and for hanging lures down to watch pike darting in the clear water) and overlooking a stretch down the lake with a wall of rock to the side, it was the dream place to end our stay on White Otter. Erik whipped us a meal off the land. The menu featured some battered and deep fried bass with a heaping bowl of blueberries. It may be the most delicious meal of all time.
