A Bed, A Meal, A Sauna??? - PLATEAU LAKE - Day Twenty Nine

From the Pickerel Narrows, we made our way out of the park through Batchewaung Lake where every corner we paddled around left us wishing we had one more night here to enjoy the smooth rocky points, secluded bays for fishing, towering monstrous pines, and the continuous splashes from bass flopping by the boat. Quetico was a real gem along our route. The scenic waterways and untouched land make for a spectacular paddling experience.

Portaging into Nym lake you find yourself suddenly in a world once again inhabited by people. Cottages and homes dot the islands and shore, and in the hot summer sun we arrived to children out playing on the docks. Incredible the difference in experiences on two ends of a portage.

We made our way to Voyageur Wilderness Program for the night where we felt that we had stumbled upon a resort for royalty. This island business is a combination of an outfitter for Quetico, a leader in environmental practices, a lodge, a camp, guides, and a special place to escape to. There was nothing like having a comfy bed for the first time in four weeks or a dinner with good company or a sauna in the evening followed by a swim under pink skies. It was also really awesome to see the marsh they built on the island to filter grey water and the buildings made from trees blown down by storms on the island. A real treat before moving on to our last day into Atikokan.
