Superior's Windy Ways - Lake Superior Day 7

We spoke too soon. The 4am start didn't happen after the storm rolled back around all night scaring the life out of Brynley when a ground shaking crack of thunder woke her from a deep sleep. Erik gave it a 5/5. The storm left roaring winds behind in the morning. We were marooned at the site for at least another day.

Luckily in our little protected bay we hardly noticed the winds. We packed a little lunch and spent the day on the rocky point to avoid the bugs of the forest. We played cards and only a few blew into the water. Pancakes were on the menu for a rest day and ours were nicely infused with all the scents of the barrel.

While one wind bound day was amusing it wasn't what we had in mind for the next. So today we did get up and rolling before the sun and set out to cross the lake.

Needless to say we ended up on shore within an hour waiting for calmer waters. How many hands of gin rummy must you play before the wind has died down enough to return to the lake? Well today it took 15 rounds. We may have been able to manage the crossing of a large bay earlier, but we didn't want to risk capsizing on a lake that averages 4°C, and a dumped canoe with an offshore wind whisking us into the open lake was not a risk worth taking.

At last we got to a pebble beach where each and every rock is a prime skipping stone. We had a big campfire with the abundant driftwood and had Mac n Cheese Monday and some marshmallows to finish off our day.

Now we understand everyone's obsession with early mornings on superior. It's been a glorious lake and one to be respected. Superior is the largest lake by surface area in the world and we've definitely felt that looking at such immense horizons. We can't wait to cross into the US tomorrow and get ready for the Grand Portage.
